Enjoy the beautiful seasons in Donegal, Ireland

Activities around Rossnowlagh, Bundoran and Donegal

Winters wrapped up for another year, it’s time to take stock and make new plans. Take some time out in the beautiful wild windswept landscape of south Donegal. Take up a new hobby try some surfing, running or even walking. It’s easy here as the beach is flat, fun and fantastic. Try a romantic Valentine’s weekend, cook something special for the one you love, walk hand in hand on the beach, take the plunge, we’ll even organise the flowers! Then wake up to the beautiful views of Durnish with its elegant swans performing their very own version of ‘Swan Lake’. At Easter the spring bulbs, daffodils, crocuses and tulips are peeping through from their winter rest and brighten the landscape, the wild garlic lines the laneways to the beach and the birds are getting restless. Take time to wave good bye to the winter geese, swans and wading birds and say hello to our summer friends swallows, martins and cuckoo. You can feel it in the air, the evenings are getting brighter, the sun is peeking out for longer and here’s to a good start to summer. Enjoy!

It’s early 6am and the sun is up and ready to shine for the day – yes it’s going to be a good one! First thing first quick glass of freshly squeezed orange juice and down to the beach for an early swim. Quick run on the beach to warm up and then go for it. Ok it is a bit cold to start but very soon the crisp clean water feels perfect. It’s good to be alive! Once the laps are done and time to get dried off, walk the beach and back home for the full Irish...enjoy it – you’re on holiday! Surf’s up today and you see the hordes of surfers making their way to the beach to catch a few waves – why not try it yourself! Festivals are on all over the county – which one do you choose – Surf Sessions, Rory Gallagher, Cup of Tae, or even place a bet at the horseracing in Ballintra. There’s loads to do today – deep sea fishing off Creevey, hill walking on the Bluestacks, catch a round of golf at Murvagh or why not head off for a drive around Donegal’s beautiful coastline. Have a great day but remember try not to miss the beautiful sunset on the beach – glass of wine- barbecue – long summer evenings perfect

A Sunday afternoon relaxing after an invigorating walk on Rossnowlagh beach. You look out the window to the flocks of swans and geese coming to land like air squadrons from years past. The quiet and elegant resident swans move over to make some space for their new guests and the local ducks, coot, teal and mallard squabble at the invasion of the peace. Yes just another autumn day – the leaves are turning golden, brambles are heavy laden with blackberries, the breeze while light is hinting at the cooler days to come... it is time to turn indoors, throw another log into the stove, fill the cup with steaming coffee, indulge in some freshly made apple tart and cream and get ready for the evening show!

Hundreds of swirling and swarming starlings getting ready to roost in the reed beds just below the window – wow what a view…go on give yourself a really relaxing break

Ok its winter but that’s never stopped you from getting out and about. There is no better time to go and see the changing landscapes. Look out for the structural forms of the twisted hawthorns, all leaning to the east, as if they are bowing to the rising sun. The westerly wind is the designer responsible for these sculptural masterpieces. The distant hills are snow-capped just straight out of a Christmas card – perfect for this time of year. Surf is still up, even better at this time of year, whether you are in or out of the water, it fun, fabulous and totally refreshing. Shopping is great too – why not visit the beautiful craft shops in Donegal Town and Ballyshannon. Travel to Enniskillen for some Christmas shopping and the finest festive fayre. then back to mydonegalholidayhome, throw a log on the fire, crack bottle of champagne and ring in three cheers to the close of the year.
